DRIVE-THRU FOOD DRIVE: Under the direction of Mayor Kelly, the Saratoga Springs Mayor’s Office will host a drive-thru food drive at the Vanderbilt Avenue Recreation Center Feb. 11-13. The food drive will benefit the Franklin Community Center and the Mother Susan Anderson Women & Children’s Emergency Shelter (funded and operated by the Saratoga Springs Soul Saving Station Church). The initiative supports the City’s invaluable community partners in the goal of ensuring that every Saratoga Springs family has access to the food they need. The Mayor’s Office requests that those who wish to contribute items to the food drive arrive at
the Recreation Center at 15 Vanderbilt Ave. during one of following drop-off times:
2 – 6 pm on Thursday, Feb. 11; 2 – 6 pm on Friday, Feb. 12; or 9 am – noon on Saturday, Feb. 13. Visitors should enter the Rec Center parking lot from Vanderbilt Ave., and stop in the traffic circle near the back entrance. They may then exit their vehicle (wearing a face mask!), and place their donation in an available cart. A staff member from the Mayor’s Office will then transport the donation inside. EXPERTS NEXT DOOR: Saratoga County History Center’s popular “Experts Next Door” series continues in 2021 with a varied line-up, putting Saratoga residents in dialogue with local and national celebrities. Feb. 12, 7pm: “A Virtual Chocolate House.” Paul Supley, proprietor of the Van Wyckes 18th Century Chocolate Haus, will explore the rich (and delicious!) history of chocolate in the 18th Century. Participants will receive information about how to create their own mouthwatering concoctions prior to the event. Thus, they can sip their creations while enjoying an engaging presentation on the social history of chocolate from the comfort of their own homes. Each event requires pre-registration. SNOWY SLOW ROLL:That’s right, the popular “Slow Rolls” are back again with the good folks of Bicycle Benefits, Impressions of Saratoga, Palette Cafe, Bikeatoga, Pint Sized, and The Dark Horse Mercantile for some cozy bike rides. A “Slow Roll” is a leisurely bike ride around Saratoga Springs with a group of bike enthusiasts while remaining socially distant and COVID conscious. You will see parts of Saratoga you may not have in a while and enjoy the company of others you love the outdoors and biking! The ride will be guided by Bikeatoga looping through quiet and safe neighborhood streets. The pace will be suitable for families too! The winter “Slow Rolls” will last approximately 1 hour. Remember to dress warmly and wear a mask. Beverages and snacks will be available for purchase at Palette before and after the bike ride. Plus, Pint Sized will be offering $1 drafts after the ride for any participants 21 and over who would like to grab a refreshing brew. HISTORICAL PRESENTATION: On Tuesday, February 16th at 6:30PM, Michael Barrett, Executive Director of the Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway will discuss Russell Sage, The Money King for the Troy Public Library. Born into poverty, Russell Sage was a self-made man, although the man he made himself into was the quintessential Robber Baron of the Gilded Age. After leaving his home in Troy for the richer pickings of NYC, his financial manipulations of the Wall Street stock market, the banking industry, railroads and other major corporations became the stuff of financial legend. Along with his primary partner Jay Gould, Sage pillaged and plundered the American economic marketplace for almost forty years. He was probably the wealthiest American at the time of his death in 1906, and his wife’s reaction to his passing is one of the greatest stories of philanthropic retaliation in American history. VIRTUAL WORKSHOP: Saratoga Clay Arts Center will present a virtual workshop from 3 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18 called Constructing Multicomponent Forms: Handled Vases with Mike Stumbras. In this three hour workshop, Mike Stumbras will demonstrate making a multi-part vase with handles on the wheel. Mike will talk about the numerous technical and design oriented challenges with planning and constructing a complex and well balanced form. Including wheel throwing, altering, pulling handles and making attachments, as well as an overview of surface considerations such as slip trailing, water etching, spraying glazes and using gold luster. Mike will speak in depth about his design philosophy, elements of ceramic history, and the concepts that are central to his work. HISTORY AT HOME: Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site is excited to announce its 2021 Virtual “History at Home” Winter Lecture series. The site will offer free online programs from January to March covering a range of interesting history topics. Hudson Valley Community College professor Matthew Zembo will provide a discussion on Feb. 18th titled, “The 34th Regiment of Foot: A British Regiment in the Northern Frontier of the American War of Independence.” Zembo will discuss how the regiment operated in a vastly different theater of war then those experienced in Europe, how civilians played a role, and what actions the soldiers engaged in during the fight to put down rebellion in New York. The 7th Annual Hudson Valley Value-Added Grain School will feature expert speakers on grain storage management, a farmer panel to share expertise on grain storage, and expert speakers on heritage corn and small grain varieties. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Albany and Ulster Counties are holding this online meeting in four sessions on Feb. 18 & 25, 2021. Online meetings have proved to be a great way for participants to learn from experts and ask questions. Help for folks new to online meetings will be provided. Ken Wise, NYS IPM, will show us common grain storage pest insects and explain how to manage them. A panel of three progressive New York grain farmers will share their expertise in storing food and feed grains, certified seed, and managing organic grain storage. Shawn Shouse, Iowa State University Extension Field Engineer, will discuss “Above Average Grain Storage Management.” Lastly, Cornell experts share their expertise with heritage, ancient, and special varieties of corn and small grains. As the local grain economy grows, people are re-discovering varieties from the past that bring rich flavor to breads, tortillas, brews and other foods. WELLNESS WALK: On Monday, February 22nd at 10:30am Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park will be holding one of our bi-monthly Wellness Walks! This is a great opportunity to enjoy winter out on the trails. Wellness Walks are geared towards gentle exercise and the enjoyment of nature and will be accessible for participants at basic fitness levels. The walk will depart from the Camp Saratoga North Trailhead kiosk. Pre-registration is appreciated as the program could be cancelled if there is bad weather. VIRTUAL WORKSHOP: Saratoga Clay Arts Center will present a virtual workshop from 3 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25 called Breaking the Body with Mark Tarabula. In this virtual workshop Mark Tarabula will be demonstrating how he uses slump molds to create abstract sculptural objects. We will discuss how to build and use slump molds to work intuitively with leather hard slabs and create one-of-a-kind works. See how he avoids repetitive studio practices by utilizing multiple parts from the extruder, the wheel, and slab molds. The 7th Annual Hudson Valley Value-Added Grain School will feature expert speakers on grain storage management, a farmer panel to share expertise on grain storage, and expert speakers on heritage corn and small grain varieties. Ken Wise, NYS IPM, will show us common grain storage pest insects and explain how to manage them. Shawn Shouse, Iowa State University Extension Field Engineer, will discuss “Above Average Grain Storage Management.” Lastly, Cornell experts share their expertise with heritage, ancient, and special varieties of corn and small grains. RENEWABLE ENERGY & SUSTAINABLE LIVING FAIR: The fifth annual Renewable Energy and Sustainable Living Fair will be held Saturday, March 6 from 10-4 pm. The Fair is sponsored by the non-profit Community Advocates for a Sustainable Environment (CASE) organization. While phrenology often merits only a footnote in modern examinations of social and medical history, it played an important role in how people regarded themselves and others during the formative years of the 1840s. Influencing topics as varied as courtship, employment, criminal justice, abolition, medicine, and suffrage, phrenology was intertwined throughout the everyday lives of many. We will also examine the darker sides of the now debunked concepts, exploring how people of color and indigenous populations were further disenfranchised by its teachings. HISTORY AT HOME: Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site is excited to announce its 2021 Virtual “History at Home” Winter Lecture series. The site will offer free online programs from January to March covering a range of interesting history topics. Links for the programs can be found on Schoharie Crossings NYS Parks webpage, on their Facebook, or by contacting the site. To wrap up the series, Audrey Humphrey from Johnson Hall State Historic Site will present an exploration of Sir William Johnson and his connection to Fort Hunter on March 18th. Johnson was one of the largest landowners in New York by the mid-18th century and his influence in the Mohawk Valley is evident even to this day. As Superintendent of Indian Affairs, his connection to the Mohawk village of Tionondoroge and congregation at Queen Anne’s Chapel influenced the how the American Revolution played out in New York after his death in 1774.
